This project is based on the question,
"What if Thoreau had been a photographer?" We
will retrace Thoreau's path through nature by photographing
what Thoreau may have had seen, using only the photographic
technology available at his time. The photograph process
is called Calotype, invented by Thoreau's contemporary William
Henry Fox Talbot.
The objective of Beyond Spheres Project includes production
of large art work consisting of multiple plates. In honoring
William Henry Fox Talbot's world's first photo book "Pencil
of the Nature" we will producea portfolio photo book
of original prints from Beyond Spheres Project. It will
be a 21st century version of "Pencil of the Nature"
titled "Beyond Spheres"
.
This production phase of Beyond Spheres Project is scheduled
to begin in March 2012, and end in December 2015.
The works will be presented to the public in museums, educational
institutions and commercial galleries in the New England
area, in proximity to the shooting locations (please refer
to listing). The red line on the map shows Thoreau's footsteps.
His trips to Cape Cod and Maine each resulted in his masterpieces.

The purpose of all his trips was to gain
the insight to write his own "Cosmic Journal"
as well as expanding his phenomenological relationship
with nature. Outside his journey, Thoreau spent all his
life in the vicinity of Concord, Massachusetts, including
two years and two months on Walden Pond. There, he continued
his serious exploration of the nature around him and produced
several books and journals
.Beyond Spheres Project, while giving an important consideration
to shoot in Concord area, will explore each destination
repeatedly with four seasons in mind. The project will follow
Thoreau's footsteps carefully without hurry. We are not
in search of rare scenic spots to admire and visit once
a lifetime, but in search of ways to contemplate everyday
nature around us as Thoreau did.
